hi All, Is someone using this software. How much good is VHDL support? And the synthesis process from VHDL to Cypress chips? The text editor has syntax highlighting and the rest is also quite good -the design browser figures out the file hierachy once you point out the toplevel file. Not sure about the latest release, but in the previous one youhad to have your entity and architecture in the same file. It's not a bad tool, and if the end target is a Cypress CPLD thereis no need to get more expensive tools such as Leonardo involved.I think the latest version is release 5.1. It's not normallyexpensive anyway but if you ask your vendor nicely when buying someparts, they may give it to you for free.- -David Miller Tel: +44 (0)131 343 4963Development Engineer Fax: +44 (0)131 343 4091Crewe Toll, EdinburghEH5 2XS- -Tue, 16 Oct 2001 03:00:00 GMT.

The text editor has syntax highlighting and the rest is also quite good -Compared to their previous text editor, which had enough interesting quirks(incredibly slow scrolling, copy and paste that don't work like the Windowsstandard, etc.) so as to make it preferable to not even use it, this versionis a big improvement. In fact, in general Warp 5+ is a significant step over Warp 4. It seemsthat the Warp programmers finally figured out what is, and their use ofit has lended a significantly more professional look and feel to theirproduct.

I think the latest version is release 5.1. It's not normallyexpensive anyway but if you ask your vendor nicely when buying someparts, they may give it to you for free.As far as I can tell, these are the ways to obtain Warp:$0 - Ask your favorite Cypress rep of distributor for a copy of the CD.$50 - Purchase Kevin Skahill's VHDL book, get the CD included with it.$100 - Send this much to Cypress, they'll send you the CD, and keep sendingyou updates (more or less indefinitely, as far as I can tell).$150 - Same as above, plus they'll toss in the in-circuit programmingcable.-Joel KolstadTue, 16 Oct 2001 03:00:00 GMT. Of all of the VHDL synthesis packages I've tried, Cypress Warp hasbeen the best. Support has been outstanding too.Cough Just which synthesis packages have you used? I'd take Synplify overWarp any day of the week, although the price tag ($20K node locked, $40Kfloating, although these do include synthesis for all major FPGA/CPLDmanufacturers) is pretty severe compared to the $100 (or less) price tag ofWarp. And this is not to say that Warp is bad - it by no means is. It'sjust something of a lightweight compared to other, far more expensivepackages. In my experience, their support has been pretty good, but it can take a longtime to sort through problems in the compiler given that Cypress techsupport is down in California whereas the Cypress development staff is up inOregon.

(You really do have to take the approach of, 'Find a way to workaround the problem, send a copy of the problem off to Cypress, and then seewhat they have to say in a week or two.' ) Having their support databaseon-line (at their web site) is a good thing; there are far too manycompanies that are afraid of publically admitting that there are any bugs(gasp!) in their software.I suppose that if you call up OrCAD's tech support, you don't find PaulMenchini answering the phone either.-Joel KolstadThu, 18 Oct 2001 03:00:00 GMT. It'sjust something of a lightweight compared to other, far more expensivepackages.snip. Snip.My exposure has been limited - I'm talking about the low-end packagesthat the CPLD vendors offer.Lattice's version of Synplicity is garbage - you have to examine theproduced equations in their pDS+ fitter package to find that nothingwas synthesized. If you talk to tech support, they tell you that whatyou coded was OK, but send you back different code that synthesizes. They can't tell you why it works or doesn't work the way it does. Nosupport for simulation in the version we have. The jury's still out on the Xilinx Foundation 1.5 stuff. Download keygen coreldraw x4.rar. The Warp package is, well, interesting. For many things it is usefuland well worth the money. How good is it?

That all depends on whatyou expect. I would say that it is better than almost all inexpensiveCPLD tools out there, but it can't compare to any of the better tools.Their tech support is OK, better than average. But it has to be, giventhe number of bugs, etc, that they have. The latest versions are muchbetter than before, but even the latest versions are not bug free.

Justrecently a friend of mine and I uncovered two bugs that generateinvalid/incorrect logic with no warnings or anything. This is the exception, however. I think that most people will never see the types of bugs thatI've found.I tried to install the newest version recently, but I ran into installationproblems (conflict with my Xilinx F1.5/Aldec installation). I was ina hurry so I didn't have time to figure out what was wrong- so I justdeleted Warp and reinstalled v 4.x. So the following comments maynot apply to v 5.x.I absolutely HATE their editor. Since v2.x, Warp has always been weakin the editor. The later versions were better, but I find them annoying tothe point of being useless.

I'd rather use Notepad. The main thing I findannoying is the lack of keyboard shortcuts. In all windows editors, you cando things like hold down the shift key while cursoring around to highlight ablock.

Or Ctrl-End to go to the end of the file. Or Ctrl-X/C/V to cut andpaste. Or Ctrl-Cursor to quickly go to the next/previous word.

But all ofthese don't work with Warp. The second problem that I've had recently with Warp is when I recentlycompiled a LARGE design. It was a 6502 clone that I tried to compilefor a 512 macrocell part. Warp just sat there for hours, slowly consumingmemory.

At one point, all 2 gigabytes of my swap space was taken upand Warp ended without so much as a warning saying that it failed. Whenthe design was simplified, it finally quit with a proper warning.But.

Aside from these problems the Warp software is very useableand worth the money. My only recommendation to them (other thanfixing the bugs) is to stop pretending that this software costs money(since they give it away so easily) and just put it on their web site foranyone to download.
